Stamford Activists Planning Tesla Protest Saturday Over Musk Involvement in Federal Government Chaos
Local Group Taking Action This Weekend
STAMFORD — Amid the disarray in the federal government, local activists are speaking up and taking a stand. That includes at a local rally being planned for Saturday.
Organizers with Indivisible Stamford, a local affiliate of national grassroots organization Indivisible, are planning a protest in opposition to Tesla, Inc. CEO Elon Musk, who has been involved with the Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Also known as DOGE, the agency has been trying to cut federal funding and lay off or fire thousands of federal employees in an attempt to save money without consideration for national security risks, disruption of federal operations (which impacted Connecticut), and a lack of transparency.
According to new polling from Navigator Research, three in five Americans expressed concern over government spending cuts and federal employee firings. The survey also indicates many negative sentiments around Musk’s involvement in the Trump Administration.
The backlash started earlier this month with Tesla protests sprouting up nationwide, as reported by the BBC:
“In some places, those protests barely numbered a dozen, with people in Washington DC, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and Lyndhurst, Ohio, stamping their feet to stay warm amid snow and cold weather. Some held signs that read ‘Say no to Doge’ and ‘Deport Musk’.
The protest in Berkeley - a top California city for electric car ownership - numbered 200.”
Organizers are anticipating upwards of 50 people in attendance on Saturday.
For the Stamford protest, on the sign-up page, people planning to attend are directed to meet in the parking lot of the ShopRite location on the West Side which is next to a local Tesla dealership.
The event will begin at noon with participants marching to the Tesla dealership and then walking toward West Main Street to spread awareness even further to people passing by the busy road.
Michelle Abt, a member of Indivisible Stamford, explained why the protest is being held and encouraged like-minded residents to join the rally.
“No one elected Musk, but he has unlimited power over our government and our data. He is terrorizing an entire workforce and shredding our institutions,” Abt said. “This is outrageous and illegal. We can’t sit back and let this happen. An obvious place to express our anger and dismay is at Tesla. So come down and tell Musk how you feel.”
Recent weeks have seen Tesla’s stock price fall drastically in large part due to the continued negative reaction to Musk’s controversial moves to cripple the federal government.
According to Pras Subramanian of Yahoo Finance, “[o]ne big culprit is CEO Elon Musk's behavior. His political activity, both in the US with DOGE’s controversial moves and abroad, where Musk’s embrace of far-right political movements, is likely alienating wide swaths of the public, current customers, and potential Tesla buyers.”
